Tagging people (@)

In a post or comment you can tag up to 5 people by typing @ and a name. The tagged person gets a notification. You decide who can tag you.

How it works

  • Type @ and start typing a name. The “People to tag” list appears - choose a person.
  • We only suggest people from three groups: people in the conversation under the post (the author and commenters), your contacts and people you chat with.
  • You can tag at most 5 people in one post or comment (“You can tag up to 5 people in one post.”). You can add up to 100 new tags a day.
  • The tagged person must be able to see the post. You cannot tag anyone in an “Only me” post, and in a “Friends” post - only your contacts.
  • A block in either direction rules out tagging.
  • For each tag we send one notification, e.g. “Anna Nowak mentioned you in a post”. Editing the post does not send it again.

Who can tag you

  • “Everyone” - contacts, people in the conversation under a post and people you chat with.
  • “Contacts and people in the conversation” - your contacts and people in the conversation under a post you take part in. This is the default setting.
  • “Nobody” - nobody can tag you.

On the website: tag settings

  1. Click your photo in the top bar → “Settings”.
  2. Open the “Privacy” section and find “@ tags”.
  3. In “Who can tag me” choose “Everyone”, “Contacts and people in the conversation” or “Nobody”.

In the app: tag settings

  1. Tap your photo at the top of the home screen → “Settings”.
  2. In the “Mentions (@)” section tap “Who can tag me”.
  3. Choose “Everyone”, “Contacts and people in the conversation” or “Nobody”.

Removing your tag

On the website: removing a tag

  1. Open the post you were tagged in.
  2. In the post menu (or next to the comment) choose “Remove my tag”.

In the app: removing a tag

  1. Tap the menu (⋯) next to the post you were tagged in (or next to the comment).
  2. Choose “Remove my tag”.

After removing it, your name stays in the text as plain text, without a link to your profile. You will not go back on the list of tagged people and will no longer get notifications from that post.

Tip: Tag people who really have something to add - e.g. a speaker after an event or a partner when announcing a success. Tagging random people puts others off.
