How to start a conversation well
A few simple rules that will get you replies more often and help you get to the point faster.
Before you write
- Look at the profile: “About me”, what this person is looking for and what they offer, their experience. On the card in Meet you will also see the “Your match” section - there is a ready-made topic to start with.
- Complete your own profile. The first thing the other person will do is click your photo and bio.
- Check whether the person is “Online now”. A message sent at that moment has the best chance of a quick reply.
The first message
- Be specific about where you are writing from and why to them, e.g. “I see you are looking for an e-commerce co-founder - I have been running a store for 5 years and would be happy to talk”.
- One question instead of five. A short message is easier to answer.
- Do not paste an offer or links straight away. In 1:1 conversations links to external websites are not clickable.
- Write in your own language. We translate foreign-language messages automatically, so you do not need to know the other person's language.
- Instead of just “Hello”, add a sentence about what you have in common - a mutual contact, an event or an industry.
When there is no reply
Give the other side time. If they do not read the message for a few hours, they may get an email from us saying a message is waiting for them. The “Read” status under the message will show you that they have seen it. One polite reminder after a few days is fine. A series of messages with no reply is not.
On the website: handy tools
- In a conversation click “Show profile” to have the other person's profile next to the chat.
- Hover over a message and click “···” to reply to a specific message (“Reply”) or add a reaction.
- Send a voice message - sometimes 20 seconds of voice says more than a long text.
In the app: handy tools
- Press and hold a message to reply to it (“Reply”) or add a reaction.
- Use the microphone icon next to the text field to record a voice message (up to 5 minutes).
- Turn on “Translate automatically” above the text field if the other person writes in a different language.
Frequently asked questions
Can I send someone a link to my website?
You can, but in a 1:1 conversation it will be plain text (only links to mybzz.com are clickable on the website). It is better to add your website to your profile in the contact section.
What if someone keeps pestering me?
Block them in the conversation and report the profile. Details in the article about blocking and reporting.
