Message notifications and read receipts

How you know someone has written, and how the other person knows you have read their message: push notifications, email, counters and statuses.

How it works

  • Push notification: “New message” and the sender's name. We do not show the message content in the notification. In a group chat you will see “In the group” and the group name.
  • Email: if you do not read a message for at least 2 hours, we may send you an email. This applies to 1:1 conversations and only when you have email notifications about messages turned on and an email address provided.
  • An unread counter next to the chat icon and in the app.
  • Status under your last message: “Sent” or “Read” with the time. In groups: “Read by: …” or “Read by everyone”.
  • “typing…” - you see it when the other person is writing.
  • Green dot - the person was active within the last 2 minutes.

We mark a message as read when you open the conversation. Read receipts cannot be turned off.

On the website: turning on notifications

  1. When the “Enable notifications” prompt appears, click “Enable” and allow it in your browser.
  2. Click your photo in the top bar → “Settings” → “Notifications”.
  3. In the “Messages” row tick the “Email” and “Push” channels.
  4. Under the bell you can also turn the “Notification sound” on or off.

In the app: turning on notifications

  1. When you first launch the app, allow it to send notifications.
  2. If you refused earlier, turn them on in your phone settings for the Mybzz app.
  3. You choose what we notify you about in the menu (your photo) → “Settings” → “Notifications”.

Good to know

  • Message notifications also appear under the bell on the website and under the rocket icon in the app.
  • When you have a conversation open, new messages appear straight away.
  • A single conversation cannot be muted.
Tip: Mostly use a computer? Turn on browser notifications - you will learn about a message even with the Mybzz tab closed.

Frequently asked questions

Can the other person see that I have read the message?

Yes. When you open the conversation, “Read” with the time appears under their message.

Why did I not get an email about a message?

We send the email about 2 hours after an unread message, only in 1:1 conversations and only if you have an email address and email notifications about messages turned on.

Something not working?

I do not get push notifications on my phone.

Check in your phone settings that Mybzz is allowed to send notifications and that “Do Not Disturb” is not on. Also make sure you are signed in to the app.

I do not get notifications in my browser.

Check that your browser allows notifications for mybzz.com (the padlock icon next to the address).

Something missing? This documentation describes how Mybzz works today. If something doesn't match what you see, message us in the chat (bottom right corner of the website, or in the app: Settings → Contact Us) - we'll fix the guide or the app.
